Treated black coloured diamonds start as natural low clarity diamonds.

However these treated black diamonds are just imitations of their natural counterparts. A relatively small percentage of gem quality diamonds are treated and they are treated for two reasons. Irradiation and heat treatment combined. An enhanced black diamond is a natural diamond that is treated with radiation to obtain a uniform black color.

Diamonds which are purple pink blue yellow and brown can be created in this manner. Here diamonds of less good quality and purity are irradiated intensively usually with neutrons. If the inclusion cavity does not reach the outer surface of the finished cut diamond then the acid has no way of penetrating the inclusion. White diamonds of very low clarity go through a treatment process to change the stone colour.

However the blue green color of this process is so dark that the diamond appears black.
